At first glance, St. Vincent and the Grenadines appears to be an independent island state – yet the legacy of colonialism remains ever-present. British colonial rule brought forced domination and the enslavement of African people, shaping the country’s economy, education, and society to this day. Since gaining independence in 1979, the nation has sought political and cultural self-determination, while still remaining under the influence of Britain. For many young people, this means limited opportunities in a society whose present is deeply intertwined with its colonial past. This project explores the experiences and efforts of emancipation among 18- to 30-year-olds in St. Vincent and the Grenadines – a generation growing up between Indigenous heritage and colonial structures. My personal motivation stems from my family roots and a deeper search for identity. The focus lies not only on challenges and structural barriers, but also on resilience and perspectives.
